Pelicans at Birdworld in Surrey video - August 2012
Availability, cost, upkeep and housing are all factors that need to be thought through before you take the plunge.
This page covers large aviaries and zoos - both with local and national dimensions - and where we're aware, we've included information like 'keeper for the day' packages that allow a much more interactive element.
Although we've separated out the club shows on local clubs & shows you should factor in these events for getting up close to birds and being able to talk to keepers & club members.
Kent and the surrounding areas offer some great opportunities for viewing fantastic birds. You shouldn't miss out on it! All the best.

Kent - Leeds Castle (retained for information) | Leeds Castle, Maidstone, Kent ME17 1PL (just off Junction 8 of the M20). Superb setting
that had a wide range of exotic birds and was renowned for successful breeding of Bali Starlings and
Channel-billed Toucans.
The news that Leeds Castle was to close its aviary was a huge blow to aviculture in the Kent area as well as the loss of jobs for the dedicated staff. The curator, Laura Gardner, had to engage in discussions to re-house the collection before October 2012. The aviary had won awards for its care and understanding of breeding rare and endangered species. Leeds Castle will be very much the poorer - in educational and enjoyment factors - as a result of this closure. |
